It sits at the western edge of the Oklahoma Ozarks, roughly one hour east of Tulsa. The region is best known for Lake Tenkiller (a 12,900-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir), the scenic Illinois River (an Oklahoma Wild and Scenic River popular for floating), the Cherokee Heritage Center, and the annual Cherokee National Holiday. Northeastern State University, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the West, is also located in Tahlequah.
